Vendor Cart Hot Dog Photoblogging: We Have A Wiener

(Click for bigger.)

Out of all the vendor cart hot dogs I've photographed (click on the "hot dogs" topic tag below for more), this one is by far my favorite. The drawing is schematic yet logical, and there's a wonderful tension between the overall flatness of the forms and the sparingly applied highlights. The rendering of the relish, such a challenge to other hot dog painters, is here masterfully solved. If I were to paint my own replica of a vendor cart hot dog, I would slavishly copy this one, right down to the applied vinyl lettering and maybe even the rivets. Next I would leave it outside for a couple of months to accumulate some dirt and dust, and then I would seal it with a matte varnish. After hanging it on the wall, I would proceed to sit in front of it in a chair and stare at it until I achieved total enlightenment.

I'm wondering if the artist in this case isn't West African/Ghanaian - it looks a lot like the fantastic shop signs and painted minibuses you see there. Great stuff!

'tis symmetrical and mysterious. I love how the mustard and relish seem to form a riding saddle.

Muscato, quite possibly, but more likely East African, given DC's large and vibrant Ethiopian community.
