Favorite Icelandic Candy Packaging Design

 Click for LOTS bigger!

A colleague recently returned from a trip to Iceland, and brought with her boxes of Opal, the super-popular local candy. The candy itself was... not so good: little rubbery licorice pastilles which weren't quite gummy enough and had a sharp, medicinal taste.  The ultramodern box, however, was a big hit with me, and I was surprised to discover that the design dates, unchanged, to 1946, which makes me love it even more. You can see beautiful photographs of the packaging variations here, and the company's equally great-looking product page here.

Unchanged since 1946??!! Massive graphic design worship! Those pesky Europeans had it all over we Americans, design wise.

It looks like the old Oxydol packaging I grew up with.
