Real Food: Tastykake!

(Click for bigger)

Happy New Year! I'm back! Sorry, I've been a little under the weather lately, but all's well. I know I said I was going to post a round-up of my comics writing for 2012, but it seems like the moment for doing so has passed, so... oh well.

But just think of how well 2013 has started off for Tastykake*! And, I suppose, Little Debbie. Both these brands have been laboring on the shelves below Hostess products for so long, it must have been a dream come true when their more successful rival suddenly evaporated from stores. Now Tastykake and Little Debbie will vie for dominance. Who will win?

*I guess Tastykake is just a Mid-Atlantic thing? I'm assuming there are other regional Hostess-manqués in other areas.

Tastykake is a very Philadelphia thing. We had them in the NYC area too, but it is the love of the Tastykake by my Philly friends that stands out. *shudders*

Tastykake - Little Debbie products always taste of formaldehyde.

My mom is from Philly and loves her Tastycakes! They win over Little Debbie in my book.

Good use of the word manque'.

Don't forget Entenmann's!

Thank you for new post. I almost dreaded opening your blog for fear of the awful eyeball greeting me yet again.

Tastykake used to be a Mid-Atlantic thing, until they were bought out by Flowers Foods of Collegedale, TN (near the Georgia line). Little Debbie is based in Thomasville, Ga. (near the Florida line). So apparently, the key to dominating the lucrative bleached-flour and corn-syrup market is to be located on the outskirts of Georgia.

Oh, and Entenmann's died with Hostess; they were bought out by the death star years ago.

Wow, I'd never heard of Tastykake. And so ignorant I was, that at first I thought you were making a pun on, ahem, bukake. As if to say, "Here is this larger than life cupcake filled with cream that I'm putting in your face."

In hindsight, I really should have known better.

When I was in high school in the early 80's in Southern California, there was a new kid who was a consumate douche. He had a Camaro with the vanity plate T KAKE and, as he told everyone in an effort to impress, his Dad was in charge of bestowing the delicious Tastyake on the west coast from the obviously superior east. He spoke of this imminent sea change in the snack food world in reverent tones. I never noticed Tastykake in CA after that.

That photo is seriously nasty and obscene, looking rather like a monster spooge shot on the side of a bus. Congratulations.

Alas, my kingdom for a Tiger Tail...the demise of Hostess is depressing. In the 80's we could play with our excessive surrealist food; now we're all healthy n' stuff...
