It Isn't Just Right-Wingers Being Dicks About Kagen's Speculative Lesbianness

Tzipi 'n' Condi! PSP flashback to 01-16-09.

Seriously, poor Elena! Andrew Sullivan is being the worst. Is she gay? he bellows, not just once, but over and over, and then tries to drive home the point by later showing her playing softball, because everybody knows only lesbians play softball.

And now we have Dan Savage, who I love 99.8% of the time, posting the most stupid thing: yes, he admits, people are saying Elena Kagen dated men... just like Wanda Sykes and Meredith Baxter and Portia de Rossi, if you get his drift.

What is really a bummer about this pointless, lurid speculation is that the question of Kagen's sexuality comes down to two things: she isn't married and she looks kinda butch.

This is really embarrassing. Juvenile and embarrassing.

I so agree. And I laughed out loud at the photo which is purported to suggest that she just might be a lesbian...if softball is all it takes, then pretty much every woman I grew up with in Philadelphia is a lesbian. If they find a picture of her at a dog park, then I guess we have conclusive proof.

Joemygod pointed put that the Wall Street Journal used the same photo.

Sadly, and to the detriment of my already paltry and pathetic non-lovelife, my gaydar isn't that good, so she'll probably come out at the hearings and I'll feel a fool, but I'm beginning to think she isn't a lesbian, just a butch straight woman who has been too focused on her ambition to be a Supreme Court justice to find the right guy. Also, she probably has high standards, while the guys who would fit those standards are probably already on their nth law school student or summer associate while their wife stays at home to take care of the kids.

"...everybody knows only lesbians play softball."

Ah, but does she bowl on Friday nights?

My gaydar is spinning, but then I'm not into short butch women, so I consider it a total wash.

Jeez. There was blog speculation on Condi, but if there was any lamestream media on it, I missed it.

Kagen may be gay, but I'm not getting any feeling one way or another.

It's all so goofy. I know tons of straight unmarried 50ish gals. Many of them have friends-with-benefits, but nobody they're serious about. So what?

Truth is -- Kagen looks quite a bit like female acedmics I've known & dresses like almost all the female musicians in my sister's orchestra.

Just like them -- she's a nerd!

I think America needs a new rule.
If a potentially gay person is too unattractive to be desired by either gender, then the sexual orientation issue is rendered moot and all parties must move on.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it matters. It is a colossal waste of time to spend one's life trying to figure out what happens in the bedrooms of others.

Yeah, when Savage comes down on that 0.2% occasionally, you just want to smack him with a rolled-up weekly newspaper.

"Bad columnist! Look what you did on the floor! Bad!"
