Reading Between The Lines

I don't mean to be insensitive, but when I read about the suicide of Marie Osmond's son in People magazine, the following jumped out at me (emphasis mine):

But by 2008, Michael, a talented musician and high school senior, appeared to be doing better: Mom boasted in her book Might As Well Laugh About It that he "had been accepted into a performing arts program for high school students."

Last fall, he enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. One of Michael's close friends says he "was happy" and "loved" L.A. – and the move made Osmond happy, too.

Hmmm... he went from a performing arts program in high school to the Fashion Institute of Design. Something tells me we're missing more than a few pieces of this story, but I think I already know what those pieces look like.

You may be on to something here but I think that Marie Osmond, despite the cult that she's trapped in, is supportive of the LGBT community in as much as she can be without being stoned to death. Her son should have felt some support from her. Here's an article from The Advocate

Osmond made headlines last year when she opened up about her lesbian daughter. Tabloids had run stories suggesting Osmond was ashamed of her daughter, but the entertainer told a Los Angeles radio station that despite her Mormon upbringing, she is extremely supportive of and close to her daughter Jessica and that reports to the contrary were untrue.

"You know, on those types of things I'm very supportive," she said at the time. "When it comes to marriage, I think that civil rights need to be for all."

Poor kid. To be young, gay, and trapped in that horrid Church was bad enough, but to have that harpy for a mom must have been the final insult.

That's good info, LIBear, thanks for that. We'll see.

My heart breaks for those kids. It's the equivalent of the polygamous communities driving 14 year old boys miles from their communities and dropping them off at roadsides to keep them from being competition to the old men who want to marry the teen girls. And their mothers let it happen. I wept when I read that information.

Maybe it's okay for Mormon girls to be gay, but for the boys it's not okay?
I guess girls don't count.

I... don't want to step in there too deeply, since we're just guessing. And now I'm going to. Even if their mother is totally supportive, there's nothing like every authority figure in your life telling you that they're going to try and love you even though everything you want is immoral and damns you to Hell to... well, the point here is, being immersed in an even subtly hostile culture can literally kill you.

It is really tragic.

You may be reading between the lines, the National Enquirer is screaming it out with no pussyfooting. "Marie Osmond suicidal over the death of her gay son."

It was only the 1970s when the Mormons decided that blacks didn't have to be second class members of their goofy little cult. I don't know how much weight Marie's word carries in their world, but if she became their Martin Luther, the cult might move into the present day a little faster.
