Here's Your Sarah Palin Neimansgate Roundup

The McCain campaign probably thought that Sarah's expensive wardrobe was yesterday's story, and that the outrage and ridicule was mostly over. They were fabulously wrong! Indeed, nearly every major news outlet saved their best for today. Here's a partial roundup:

  • Ruth Marcus in the Washington Post: "...that it’s a good idea, when the shopping spree turns up on the campaign reports, to say: “The campaign does not comment on strategic decisions regarding how financial resources available to the campaign are spent." Strategic decisions -- like what, St. John vs. Dior?"
  • Robin Givhan, also in the Post: "$789.72 at Barneys New York, which, considering the typical prices there, probably got Palin little more than a scarf."
  • Patrick Healy in the NY Times: "Sarah Palin’s wardrobe joined the ranks of symbolic political excess on Wednesday."
  • Also in the Times: "“My first reaction when I heard about this was, ‘Honey, I could have dressed you for a lot less than that,’ ” said Cindi Leive, the editor in chief of Glamour magazine."
  • Robin Abcarian in the LA Times: "A spokesman for the Obama campaign said the DNC had not bought the Obamas any clothing or hair or makeup services."
  • BBC News: "It looks as though Mrs Palin's "the heels are on, the gloves are off" comment was more firmly based in reality than was previously thought."
  • Kansas City Star: "This is the kind of free-spending mindset Washington does not need right now. In fact, it's the kind of free-spending mindset that Palin supposedly opposes."
  • Houston Chronicle: ""While Texans are struggling to spend even $150 for their wardrobes," he said, "Sarah Palin is out trying to look sharp for the cameras.""
  • Even Townhall.com timidly admits, "...this does seem extravagant," and tries, fails to find similar extravagance in the Obama campaign.

There's more, much more! But let's just leave it with this illustration from the Christian Science Monitor:

The McCain campaign will have to work really, really hard to top this one, and I am confident they are up to the task.

MEGAPOST UPDATE! Politico has thrown the question of Neimansgate into their Arena, where biased LOLpundits will bat it around like a particularly nubby ball of yarn. I can't wait to see how Grover Norquist will spin this one. My guess is that he'll avoid the topic entirely by saying something about it being a "trivial distraction," the ready-made answer to the question thoughtfully provided by Politico in the title of the topic. And then he'll talk about Obama raising taxes. Stay tuned!

SILLY TAXBEAR UPDATE: It looks like Norquist is taking a pass on this one. Coward! Norquist writes, cryptically, "Trivial. And Biden's plans for a copycat "malfunction" are just wrong." Huh?

INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT UPDATE: Piper's $800 Louis Vuitton bag? It isn't. It's fake. Sorry. More info in the comments section.

Can you really get a big pimpin' hat with a feather at Needless Markup? I don't shop there myself, but I could sure go for one of those like the Toddster has.

so according to the slideshow in the NYTimes, the sorta-Condi-esque boots from a few weeks ago were Cole Hann...

The Times also reports that the red pumps worn by La Palina during her August trip to Dayton were from Naughty Monkey ("a brand targeted to teenagers") and retail for $89.

Bonus Times oxymoron: "preppy track jacket"

Too bad AIG doesn't have a boutique. Palin could have purchased some rad Wall Street shmatas from them.

Don't forget the $8000 for John Sidney McCain III's makeup. (Of course the vast majority of that went for prosthetic tongues)

Thank you for your difficult journalistic endeavor, Princess.

Palin's wedding ring looks a little on the cheap side next to all those chic GOP threads.
You'd think Cindy could have rummaged around in her diamond vault and loaned her a few carats of bling for the campaign.

Oh, but what a fabulous scarf it is.

I love the Republican rationale that after the campaign is over the clothes will be donated to charity.

so let me get this right - she needs to be dressed like VP Barbie but only until November 4 - she doesn't need to look like a VP after that?

I guess that means they know she's going to lose.

And to think of all the Gu911iani Robo-calls during dinner hour that $150k could have bought!
What a waste.

It must be killin' em that Cindy's wardrobe puts the kibosh on their possible counter-argument:

"Well, this is just for the campaign. Sarah doesn't really dress this expensive... You should all be lookin' at the expensive designer duds Michelle -- elitist! --buys with her own money."

PS - my word for the day is "petrat". Wheeee.

Ha! The all-see all-knowing me was correct!

At least one dork on Arena has tried that feeble Michelle counter-argument.He should've checked it with his wife first.

CB, that's astonishing. I'm thinking that's Mom's bag, though. It's an $800 bag!

OK, update on the Vuitton bag: I pored over the sequence of pictures on the AP site, and it's not possible to tell whose bag it is.

However, it was pretty easy to determine that it's a fake bag. It's not the one linked to by Deceiver, and it doesn't conform to LV specs, nor does it correspond to any existing real bag.

Has anyone thought to ask McCain or Obama how much their suits cost? Where they get them? Whether or not they'll be good fathers if either of them make it to President? No? Hmmm

C.B. said...

ohmyheart - Obama and McCain have both been asked about their suits. Neither has them paid for by DNC or the RNC, respectively. Consequently, how much they paid for them etc. is a non-issue. Palin has a knack for riding high on someone else's dime.

Sparkle - The bag may be a fake - but did she pay full price? Oops!

I have to ask, Princess. How does it feel that your area of expertise becomes the hottest issue of two straight 24 hour news cycles?

Princess,

Just to let you know that I am running as Condi's replacement as Secretary of State. But for now I need help for my own wardrobe bailout.

http://diplopundit.blogspot.com/2008/10/help-i-need-wardrobe-bailout.html

Gotta go, have to do my get out and lobby thingy. We can talk about unprecedented access when I get my appointment in January. Toodloo ....

Peteykins said...

Matty, I haven't felt this relevant since the John Edwards haircut story.

ohmyheart, Obama's purchase of custom-made suits was extensively reported upon. So, you know, nyah, nyah, nyah.

Hi PSP--

I just *heart* your take on the Neimansgate drama. Even though my own blog post on the topic had to take a more business-y perspective, I linked back to you so that readers could get your views...and remember how silly AND serious this all is. www.AuthenticOrganizations.com

On a different note, can we look forward to a detailed analysis of Palin's various up-dos? Surely you have some advice for how Palin could twinkle just a bit more? And, we only have a few more weeks where her hair will be at all newsworthy.

The photographer shooting the picture with her wearing the donkey scarf says he thinks someone gave it to her while she was shaking hands with a group of people.

It would be great to see someone pull off the same trick with Cindi McCain.
