Monday Audioblogging: Nobodies, You're Famous!

Oh, how I loved Suburban Lawns! This LA post-punk combo got lumped in with a lot of the "skinny tie" new wave bands, but I always thought they were smart and weird enough to stand alone. I saw them live in 1982, and they were ultra-tight and just mesmerizing. Both of the 7" singles featured today (which I bought when they were brand new, by the way) were radio hits in Southern California, and neither of them, or, indeed, any recordings by Suburban Lawns, have ever been released on CD.

Suburban Lawns released two 7" singles, a self-titled LP, and an incredible 12" EP called Baby. Seek them out! Read more about them and their peculiar lead singer, Sue Tissue, here and here and here.

Please right-click or control-click the files below to save them to your hard drive and enjoy on the mp3 player of your choice:

Gidget Goes to Hell (2:01, 2.6mb mp3)
My Boyfriend (1:40, 2.2mb mp3)
(c) 1979 Suburban Industrial Records.

Janitor (2:30, 3.1mb mp3)
Protection (1:53, 2.4mb mp3)
(c) 1980 Suburban Industrial Records.

I used to listen to the Sub Lawns on KNAC (the Long Beach new wave station at the time). Good stuff!

Wow! Just a couple of weeks ago my wife and I were trying to remember who the heck did that song we used to hear on KFJC, you know, the one where that strange-sounding woman kept singing "oh my genitals, oh my genitals. . ." and now, thanks to you, we OWNS it!
God bless you, Princess Sparkle Poney!

Wow. I used to see the Lawns play at the Cuckoo's Nest in Costa Mesa. I had a friend at UC Irvine who managed to book them for an on-campus gig. A bunch of off-campus punkers tore the place apart.

They were a great band.

I was at that show at UCI!! I can attest to the "off campus punkers" since I was one of them. But I did live in Irvine. Such a great band the Lawns were!

Thanks for sharing the eps. Kind of silly but I havent heard the surburban lawns since 1981 and listening to Janitor again just released such overwhelming sense memories, it was almost too much in a good way, not nostalgic but...well,whatever. Thanks again for sharing.

Fond memories from both the tracks and blog posters. Fun times they were.

It seems that nobody picked up on the fact that Chuck Roast (if it's actually him) made a comment on the post, gotta say that was my favorite part of the whole thing :)
