It's funny: I see paintings out of their frames constantly (I work in the same area as the conservation labs), but I've only seen them taken off their stretchers a couple of times. They look so vulnerable!

I was afraid to ask. Glad to know it's not some curator or conservator gone rogue.

Paintings unstretched are indeed unnerving; the reverse is how suddenly authoritative a canvas that you've only known unframed can look the second you throw some gilded wood around it...
