I'm going to give Bushmiller a pass on the obviously faulty drawing of the wire wastepaper basket here.

Do you think he drew the basket this way, by not showing the back side of the basket showing through the wire openings on the front side, because it would dominate the cartoon by looking too busy or overwrought? Maybe he was simplifying the image or do you think it's faulty for a different reason?

I think that's exactly correct. He sacrificed a little bit of fussy realism to clarity.

I bet he could have figured out a way to make it look correctly three-dimensional without being too distracting. Like maybe he could have drawn the wires of the back side much lighter or dashed or something?
