Sketchbook: Advocacy Of The Obvious

The drawing above is from the late 80s. I can't remember why I drew it, but there's a cleaned-up, more symmetrical version in the same folder which, of course, isn't as good. Cute!

It's important to take these stands on the important generalities of our day.

Madduane, do you remember when Steve K. and I used to obsess about generalities? This drawing is certainly an outgrowth of that.

Absoluutely! I love vagueness, too and definitely owe much of that appreciation to the goodle days.

I don't think Denny's (it's a really low-level sitdown restaurant) exists on the east coast, so you may not have seen the commercials (to which my brother alerted me a few years back) in which a man, when asked what he wants replies "everything I do, and nothing I don't". This is, of course, greeted with much fanfare. One of the more delightful tautologies I've ever encountered.

You were probably inspired by the "Love God and Goodness - Hate Bad and Badness" sign you swiped from the McMassacre shrine in San Ysidro. Still got it?

I believe it was actually "hate evil and badness".

Haw, I wasn't going to say anything about that, Mr. Bad Trash! I should throw that on the scanner, no?
