Too Much Michael Steele! Can't Keep Up! Helllllp!

It's too much! And I'm at work, so no new puppy graphic until later. But anyway, Mikey started his day by backpedaling furiously from his abortion statements: you see, when he said he was pro-choice, he really meant that he wasn't; when he said it was a states' rights issue, he really meant that there needs to be a constitutional ammendment banning all abortions on a federal level. Does that clear everything up?

And the reactions? Fantastic!

  • Tony Perkins: "It is very difficult to reconcile the GQ interview with the chairman's pledge [to be anti-abortion]."
  • Also in the Politico article linked above, some anti-abortion chick steals headlines from this blog by saying, "Ha. He has now stepped both feet into it."
  • Ken Blackwell: Steele "...needs to re-read the Bible, the U.S. Constitution, and the 2008 GOP Platform. He then needs to get to work -- or get out of the way." Them's fighting words!
  • Huckaboo: "...very troubling..."
  • Roger Stone: "Well, it's just one more nail in the coffin."
  • NPR got great quotes from evil GOP operatives Ed Rollins, who says that he needs to overcome his interview addiction, and Ed Rogers, who hilariously says, "I'm against us appearing befuddled." LOL.
  • Washington Post: "Steele's desire to spend the majority of his time in front of the camera rather than behind closed doors plotting a strategy to return Republicans to governing majorities is a common theme in discussions with GOP operatives." Yes, I noticed that, too!

OK, that brings us up to... um, 3PM. Stay tuned!

He's toast by next weekend, is my guess.

I like Pam's take on it over at House Blend: "Michael Steele either: 1) wants out of his job, or 2) doesn't realize how close he is to losing his job."

It's too bad he's going to be gone. But there seems to be no shortage of self-destructing clowns on the Republican side. I can't wait for whoever's next!

I hope I'm not scooping you Princess, but this quote from his statement today makes me think twice about the guy: "I am pro-life, always have been, always will be. I tried to present why I am pro-life while recognizing that my mother had a 'choice' before deciding to put me up for adoption."

Pro-life AND pro-choice? I wish I had that option available to me when I was a teen struggling with rectifying Catholicism and liberalism (and like most lefties, the Catholic part got the boot ultimately). But honestly it sounds like a fair position to take. Don't like the idea of abortion? Well that's reasonable on a number of counts, and not all of them sanctimonious. Don't think women should be restricted from exercising the choice? Also quite reasonable, and perhaps particularly so when paired with the first conclusion.

Too bad, I think the guy probably naively believed he could grab hold of the Republican agenda. Hopefully whoever does isn't an evil wingnut, but I'm not holding out hope for that.

For your sake, Princess, and for the sake of the country, I hope he stays on the job. I think he would lead the Republican Party in the right direction, away from the dead end loons that they call their "base", but he is doing such a bad job of it, it's like he's not leading at all, and he's giving the loons a safe sanctuary, which would mean the party would stay in the minority.

For comedy without a scandal involving an illegal act, Steele is in a class all by himself. We will miss him when he's gone.

"Steele will do fine once he gets his sea legs."

It's kinda sad, really, because I think his actual position is probably closer to GOP mainstream than the small, but vocal, 100%-no-exceptions-anti-choicers.

That is, assuming he's not completely made of paper, given that he folds enough, when the going gets tough from his own side. He's a moebius chairman! (Yes, that's twists, not folds, just go with it.)
