Ursula Talks Turkey

Austria's Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik on Monday, April 21, said EU membership negotiations with Turkey should continue but Ankara should also be open to alternative models in its relations with the bloc. Turkey's Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said his country was aware of lack of support to his country's EU bid in Austria and some other EU countries but said prejudices and problems largely stem from lack of communication. Yes! You tell 'em, Ursula! She also wore one of her mightiest scarves for the ceremonial dressing down:

And her opponent? Hopelessly outmatched:

Look at him (Turkish foreign minister Ali Babacan), gazing up at the majesty that is Austria's affable giantess. Is this wonderful apparition real? Is she my most desired fantasy or most dreaded fear? Will it hurt, and if so, for how long?

Meanwhile, Ursula's gesture says it all: Shape up and call me in a year.

In other Ursulanews, today she met with some ecumenical guy who she praised for protecting the environment and fostering interfaith tolerance. Neat!

Austria's opposition to Turkey's EU membership (led by our dear Ursula) bares more than just a faint whiff of racism, or at least xenophobia--sentiments not so unusual for the country that elected Kurt Waldheim and Jorg Haider. Ursula's scarf is indeed lovely, but that's a distraction from the fact that she should probably be a little ashamed of herself for this.

Those eyes,
Those lips,
that scarf!

I am sorry to hear about the potential for alleged xenophobia.

Still, I love her and compared to Condi, she is a fecking saint!

Ursula is not at the Archbishop of Canterbury level of acceptance of Islam, but she's still positive side of the ledger. You can say that not liking the Turks is racist, but it's hard to deny that the Turks themselves really haven't come to grips with their genocidal history with the Armenians. For more recent hisatory, their treatment of the Kurds is pretty deplorable and they still think "Hey! Let's invade another country" is a good idea.

That might play if you're the World's Only Superpower, but in Europe, they frown upon it.

And the scarf is fabulous.

The ghost of the Austro-Hungarian empire reappears with Ursula, she making sure (as she sees it) that the Ottomans not seize Vienna as they nearly did in 1683 (is that the right date). This view, caused by the Old World's continuing obsession with history, reflects our gorgeous giantess' rather pre-modern, essentially reactionary attitude, also seen, perhaps, in her infatuation with coloful, quixotic scarfs that go against trends in contemporary fashion that stress the need to have "practical" clothes. Well-meaning US liberals may find the Amazon's EU stance xenophobic and racist, but then how many Americans are lobbying to have Mexico the 51st state?

I refuse to assign negative personality traits to Ursula, so I'm assuming there are sensible reasons to delay Turkey's membership in the EU. I'm also assuming, however, that those reasons are probably too boring for this blog to get into.

Love the icon-like halo in the second pic.

Yup to the halo and she even has the praying hands of the old-timey catholic saint paintings! Oh, Ursula, you can be my Jeebus anytime!

Jeezus Princess, I just had a flash back of my grandmother kissing me with those big red lips, then licking a kleenex to wipe said lipstick off of my face. I've always wondered how I've managed to stay "somewhat" hetrosexual.

Racist, prejudiced or whatever, Turks are not Europeans and Turkey is not a European country. They are foreigners to western civilization and should not be allowed to join the EU.

70 million Muslims, that's all Europe needs to finally commit suicide.

That Turkey has a snippet of land in Europe is meaningless. England and other European countries had many territories on all the continents and this did not make them African, Asian, Indian and whatnot.

Europeans must alleviate themselves of this idiotic and suicidal notion "racism" is bad. In this case it is necessary.

Though perhaps the takeover and subjugation of Europe would go far to pay for Europe’s crimes in its former colonies.
