And Afterwards They Celebrated by Breaking Open a Festive Jew Piñata

Pope Benedict XVI is given a dove by Mustafa Sarigul, the mayor of the Sisli district in Istanbul, during a visit to Istanbul's Holy Spirit Cathedral December 1, 2006. Benedict's tour of Turkey winds up on Friday looking like an across-the-board success for his effort to repair battered relations with Turkey's Muslims. REUTERS/Stringer (TURKEY)
I love surprises, so I got kinda excited when I read this sentence in Reuter's report about the Pope's visit to Turkey:
"The Pope's dreaded visit was concluded with a wonderful surprise," wrote daily Aksam on its front page.
Yay! What was it? A stirring medley of show tunes? Flying Bicycles for everyone? A scantily-clad nun popping out of a cake? Sadly, no:
"In Sultan Ahmet Mosque, he turned towards Mecca and prayed like Muslims," popular daily Hurriyet said, using the building's official name.
That's it? The wonderful surprise was just the Pope pivoting on his Prada loafers and praying in a certain direction? And then *poof* it's all like the Crusades never happened? Seriously?

OMG, religion is soooo totally stupid.

Yes indeed, this pope is just no fun. Looking in a different direction to pray is not exactly making him look like the life of the party. At least they could give him a lamp shade to wear on his head. Now that would make him look like the party animal that we all know he really can be.

That cape just screams 'bad Santa'.

(do you think they sell his old Prada's on e-bay? I think we might have the same size feet. Me being a girl and he being the former head of the Office of the Inquisition)

Geeze, I thought maybe he'd at least've bitten the head off the dove, or pigeon, or whatever the hell they're manhandling in that photo...

And lo from above
appeared a dove
and flew among them
and shat upon them
in his mercy.

the big deal is that the Pope is acknowledging what most of the world has known for, oh, six hundred years: The Catholic Church is not the center of the God-damned (no pun intended) universe.

I don't know why you bring up the Crusades, considering that Muslims invaded Europe before the Crusades, and stayed on the Iberian peninsula for several centuries. Yet you don't see Europeans, particularly Spain, holding any grudge.
