The History of Ursula Plassnik's Scarves, Part I

October 3, 2005 will always be the standard by which all diplomatic accessories are measured. As you can see from the above photo (especially the larger version), when the Austrian behemoth strode into the European Union foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg, a stunned silence fell across the room. Even normally unflappable Jack Straw looks positively dumbfounded by Ursula's bravado show of devil-may-care scarfage.

Like a tiger, Plassnik isn't afraid to show her stripes. MRRRROWR!

She casts a giant shadow, that one.

I believe the word is Scarfoliage

The no-nonsense look on her face would stun anyone into silence, even reverence.

And what's with that giant tick on the left boob of the lady in the background?

nixie: She was clearly shot from close range with a .44. Ursula's awe-inspiring presence is the only thing keeping the poor victim alive.

That's not Jack Straw.

She looks mega-ticked (Ursula, not bug woman).

It's as if she just walked into the room and announced in the best tradition of Agatha Christie, "Someone took my favorite scarf, and I had to settle for this one. I know one of you did it, and no one leaves this conference room until we figure out who."

Could be one of Hercule Poirot's finest moments. "The Sinister Scarf Caper."

Anonymous, you know, I think you're right that it's merely a Jack Straw stand-in, but it totally makes a better post to say it's him, doesn't it?

I miss Jack.

*sniff*

Maybe the Foreign Ministers were missing Jack so much they hired a Jack-stand-in to take his place. Helps them deal with their loss.

Maybe the scarf denotes rank. It's sort of like those fancy admiral cap visors.
