Fight Back... with Grover Norquist?

It's not enough for the religious crazies to control what their own children may see on TV, they want to control what your children see, too, and what you yourself see, for that matter.

Right now they've got the FCC cracking down on so-called indecency. Tomorrow, they want to apply the same rules to cable TV and satellite radio. If they aren't stopped now, R-rated movies and books (why, they're right there on the shelf, where any innocent child may reach them!) will be next.

There's a new girl in town, and her name is TV Watch, and she's on your side. Here's what she stands for:
  • Americans should determine what is seen and heard in their own homes, based on their own personal tastes.
  • The television industry should rate programs, advise viewers about the content they are about to see, as well as promote awareness of the tools and information that allow parents to exercise control at home (v-chip in your television, parental controls on cable and satellite, television ratings, parental involvement).
  • Either we take responsibility for what our children watch or the government will decide what all of us can watch.
Cynics will point out that this group was started by entertainment industry giants like Viacom and Newscorp, but Columbia Journalism Review says, "So what?" and I agree with them. Also, if anybody tries to say that this is just another lefty-pinko-commie group, be sure to point out to them that Grover Norquist and the American Conservative Union don't usually sign up for such things, and yet there they are, rubbing shoulders with the Media Freedom Project. This is a truly bipartisan effort featuring both liberals and real conservatives. Check 'em out! Get involved!
