Guest Blogging By My Younger Self Part 1

This is a page from my journal for English class, 1981-2, when I was 16, in which I listed "People who don't deserve to have anything named after them":

(Click for bigger, legible.)

My biggest question today is, to be honest, what were my media sources? I see names from the creaky end of the variety show era, from the news, and from the radio, which is understandable, but how did I know about the whole Warhol Studio 54 crowd? I even remember leaving Warhol himself OFF the list because I liked him too much. How did I know about Halston and Bianca Jagger and Margaret Trudeau? I just don't remember.

Anyway, not substantially different from a blog post I might make today! I especially like the mingling of terrible dictators with minor pop celebrities. I'm pretty sure this is the only list ever made to include Karen Valentine and Baby Doc Duvalier, or Idi Amin and Wink Martindale. Solid pairings.

More to come!

Can you spell "precocious"? You've always struck me as somebody whose aesthetic and understanding of the world was formed early, distinctly, and with more than a smidge of divine inspiration, and it's fun to see some confirmation.

It wasn't divine inspiration, it was Divine inspiration.

The list is great, but I'm curious about the next page...I hope that's part of the 'more to come.' I got a great laugh out of Wink Martindale..it's been too long since I've heard that name.

In England, at least, there's a popular range of vegetarian foodstuffs named after Linda McCartney. I hope your younger self isn't too distressed by that.

Not to mention the Dan Fogelberg Parkway in Peoria.

My girlfriend was married to Dan Fogleberg in the late 70s; I'm not allowed to mention his name, nor tell our friends. I knew him when I lived in Nashville in '73 - a complete douche. And his "Run for the Roses" or whatever song it was he wrote for the Kentucky Derby - fucking awful.

Ugh, Dan Fogelberg is why punk rock had to happen in the Southwest.

But, the King family, they were cool! (To this geeky child of the 60's, any way.)
