How Does Everybody Feel About Hillary Clinton Wearing A Scrunchie In Public?

Just what I needed to pull me out of my blogging inactivity: hairdo controversy! This comes via the Today Show's "The Look" blog, which documents Hils disembarking a plane accompanied by the regrettable hair accessory, and then later still wearing it at some meeting.

Hillary! C'mon, no. I suppose one could argue that wearing a scrunchie on an airplane is acceptable, but I've always regarded airports and planes as primo fashion show-off zones, so I'm not buying it. Also, the Today Show blogger, Rina Raphael, while barely disguising her horror at the wayward accessory, tries to mitigate it by pointing out that Sienna Miller and Catherine Zeta Jones have been spotted in public in scrunchies and that American Apparel is selling them now. To me, though, these seem like further reasons to avoid these terrible elastic hairdo tumors.

But then... to leave the scrunchie on for a meeting? Oh, Hillary, say it ain't so! Please tell me you just forgot it was there. And to make matters worse, Hils' hair looks so totally cute otherwise!

Hillary has never been a fashion icon, obviously, and I've always admired her for that, but really! A scrunchie! The mind boggles.

Swish of the combable tail to Pony Pal z7q2 for the tip!

A friend's father was a commercial airline pilot "back in the day." This friend told me that her father always had a negative opinion of Eydie Gorme because Eydie, ensconced in first class on his plane (with Steve of course), spent the flight with her hair in pink sponge rollers. Pilot dad thought that was beyond the pale. My question is: Are scrunchies the modern equivalent of pink sponge rollers? I ask in all sincerity, since I don't wish to impugn either Eydie or Hil.

No, scrunchies are basically glorified rubber bands coated in polyester.

While I'd certainly agree that airports and airplanes are very public places, I would say that they haven't been the place to go for fashion watching since the early 70s. Unless you're looking for information on what not to do. One certainly notices the exceptions more, but even around VIP and 1st class, I don't see it much.

(I do admit a certain fascination with flight attendant garb through time, though. I'm apparently not alone in this.)

Oh, and I just can't be having with scrunchies, although it's actually making her look younger in that picture. She's got a great smile, and there's a twinkle there I haven't seen in a while. Either she's cultivated the hell out of it at State, or Mr. Sampaio is particularly charming in person.

I was going to confess that I am wearing a burnt orange scrunchie right now, but I decided that no, I'm not. Confessing, that is.

Wasn't it Oscar Wilde, who upon his deathbed uttered "either this Scrunchie goes, or I do!"

ugh, when a beautiful barrette could give one the same hair control? No, this is simply lazy.

"And to make matters worse, Hils' hair looks so totally cute otherwise!" I totally agree, and who knew, what with her perpetual bob-thingie? If I was more motivated, I'd photoshop out the scrunchie (assuming it's not photoshopped in?). This photo is total cognitive dissonance, but when it comes down to it, OMG this makes me glad I'm Canadian. What an affront to Portugal, which is small and impoverished, but totallly excellent in every other regard.

Hil's longer hairdo the past few months is a disaster, so the scrunchie actually is an improvement! She could have used a barrette, tho. Her best 'do was during the 2008 campaign. She needs to go back to that hairdresser. PDQ!

She looks really good in that photo, even with the scrunchie. But my mind is boggled with the question "where did she get it?" I thought these were drugstore items? I just can't picture her choosing this for herself. Very weird. Maybe it is some kind secret espionage code!

She's had a face lift.

I'm glad that you ID'd Hillary - my first thought upon seeing this was "Why is Jorge Sampaio meeting with The Joker?"

She isn't even recognizable!

Does a Sec of State ever travel incognito?

Scrunchies, lobster claws, pig tails are great on the under 12 set, tolerable up to 18 - 21 or so and from there the questionable hair style choice curve skyrockets up.

Scrunchies in public on a woman over 50? Pathetic. On a woman leader over 50? There aren't words for how pitiable this is.

Might as well wear your pajamas and slippers, too.

Well, she's also been sporting a *gasp* headband again!

Seriously how 1996 is this of her?

It obvious that either she's growing her hair out, or that this SOS gig doesn't allow for any time for a haircut.

Someone needs to help her out. Sheesh. Hil baby I love ya, but this has been killing be since April.
