No Biggie

Is it just me? Somehow it seems like somebody trying to bomb a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade should be bigger news. Has it gotten that bad that somebody tries to bomb a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and it's just not that noteworthy a story? Maybe Sarah Palin will Twitter a Facebook about it or something and then it will be news?

UPDATE: OK, it isn't just me. Here's Media Matters on the subject:

[...] with this new episode in Spokane, not only have the pillars of the mainstream media not raced to any conclusions, but they seem to be in a competition as to who can most ignore the story altogether.

[...]

Maybe the implications are just a little too frightening for the mainstream media to want to deal with. But this episode seems to clarify what some of us have been reporting and writing about for the last two years, that there is an escalating tide of political violence in this country, and the majority of perpetrators or incidents involve the targets of eliminationist rhetoric from the right wing. This is a major issue for America -- on a par, in my opinion, with U.S.-China relations or the future of health care reform -- and the media is dropping the ball here, big-time.

I'm perplexed. If this same backpack were found in an airport or anywhere in Tucson right now it would be the new the-only-thing-the-news-cared-about.

On Seattle radio (KOMO AM 1000) this morning, the announcers remarked that the attack could have been (small pause) racially motivated! Heavens to murgatroyd!

This is the only place I've read about this, which just underlines your point. The comments to the story at your link are fascinating. My favorite is from "Spokevin":

"This is nothing new around here. If you're walking down the street and you're NOT scanning the area around you for bombs you are a fool indeed. Just google Spokane Bomb. It's frightening how many stories you will find."

Glad someone else feels this way.

Stochastic terrorism is at all time highs in the US.

They have their own media now, too, TV and radio.

I call it the Hatestream Media.
