Fashion Victim: Irony Victim

Vintage Munsingwear Grand Slam (Penguin) polo shirt, cotton/poly.
Vintage Izod cardigan sweater, 100% Orlon™ acrylic, both probably 1973-77.

When I was a teen punk rocker in Tucson in the early 80s, I used to love wearing clothing meant for old men: ugly Munsingwear polos, Mr. Rogerish cardigan sweaters, plaid "Sansabelt" polyester pants, etc.

But now that I actually AM an older man, The Rack at Nordstrom, their trendy boutique for teenagers, is brimming with... Penguin* shirts and Mr. Rogerish cardigan sweaters. And don't even get me started on Urban Outfitters.

Dressing ironically is a minefield, people.

*The Penguin line was always totally stodgy golf/tenniswear for seniors. Munsingwear's recent successful reintroduction of the line as a brand for hipsters will be talked about in the marketing textbooks of the future. That they were able to re-release some of their old designs, totally unchanged, to a completely different demographic decades later, is nothing short of astonishing.

I can see you in those threads, daddy-o.

I recently saw a picture of the pony standing behind two river roses and a conflict. It was scary, but seeing you from then made me smile.

I remember being totally against anything and anyone with an alligator on their tit in those days. I have mellowed considerably since those days, but you, princess, have kept your edge.

Were you wearing those Penguin shirts at Sabino High School in the early eighties? I only went there one year, probably 81-82, but like to think our paths may have crossed there. Either that or at the DEVO concert that same year.

Sabino? No, I was at Tucson High. However, I did see Devo in Tucson on their New Traditionalists tour, so who knows?

Cardigans are sexy, and even sexier-- cardigan vests. Mmm-hmm. My husband wears them with a curly handlebar mustache.

And pants too, people. Clean up your minds.

I always dug Munsingwear, now that I'm an old fart I'm going to buy some again! Yay irony!
