Biden Fires First Adorable Salvo in the Executive Branch Puppy Battle

This undated photo provided by breeder Linda Brown shows Vice President-elect Joe Biden of Delaware holding his newly purchased German Shepherd puppy, which remains name-less so far, at Brown's home in East Coventry Township in Chester County, Pa. President-elect Barack Obama has still to fulfill his election promise to his daughters and select a puppy who will live with them at the White House. (AP Photo/Brown Family)

I grew up with German shepherds, so I love the idea of one galumphing and waggling around the VP palace. Such wonderful dogs. Well done, Joe! The Boss is going to have a tough time out-cuting that. This is a war everybody wins!

As the owner of a German Shepard puppy, this pleases me to no end!

He's going to need something so adorable yet something so potentially fierce so that when Dick Cheney's booby traps release Cerberus, Biden will have some kind of defense.

I dare anyone to Photoshop a picture of Cheney's head on this photo...if you can find one of him NOT eating a puppy!!

I have a pic of the pup standing on his own and he looks very defiant, except for his one floppy ear and his sweet little eyebrows.
Shepherds are wonderful dogs if they are raised to be nice. I think Joe will raise a very nice mammoth.

If he starts doing blackface then he's gone way to far.

I have to admit I love GSDs. My family had several growing up. I got a GSD/Lab mutt for my first Christmas. I love them even more when they are mixed with other breeds. It's the best of both worlds. Plus they are far less prone to hip dysplasia which has been deeply bred into the GSD to meet the Kennel Club stance standard. Even when buying from a top notch breeder GSDs still tend to limp and drag their hind quarter in later years. It's so sad. :(

I really hope that the Obama family goes for a mixed breed (I don't mean *purchasing* a mix breed like Golden Ret. and a Poodle) from a shelter.

Asked to comment, Sarah Palin advised, "I think he should have selected an American dog."

That puppy is such a sweet thing! I just held my own hands up to my face in the mirror, just to see if, like this puppy, my two hands are as big as my head. This puppy has BIG feet. Big ones.

I hope that he ends up being one of the German Shepherds who can actually galumph about. I hate what breeders have done to Shepherds making their back ends scrap pavement. :(

But this puppy! Adore!

ABSOLUTELY STAGGERING that Biden's "buying" a dog, when literally hundreds of thousands of wondrous dogs (many of them purebreds) are euthanized every year for want of a loving home. As far as I'm concerned DOG BREEDERS who take money for trading a living, breathing creature will find a special place in hell awaiting them... except of course there's no such thing as an afterlife, and once those unwanted, terrified and abandoned dogs are euthanized, that's IT. They've known little but misery in their little lives. Good work, Joe, contributing to that.

I wish Biden had adopted a shelter dog too, but at least he bought from a breeder and not a puppy mill-supporting pet store! Chill out...

I saw the breeder who sold him the dog being interviewed. She said Joe kissed the little dog right on the nose.

Now that's my kind of guy. I love it!

The PETA people are complaining that Jill didn't find him a shelter pet. Jeeze, pure bred dog breeding is an American industry that deserves support, too.
Wanting to know a dog breed's temperament and characteristics are not crimes, for God's sake.
Joe should make a nice donation to the ASPCA and go on to enjoy his GS pup.

It's not just PeTA. Plain old dog People like me are sad about it.

The problem is that it's an industry, Karen and the dogs are treated as "things". You don't know what you are going to get for the dog's characteristics and temperament when you buy from a breeder. The better thing to do is get a dog in need and train, train, train. It's never the dog - It's always the owner that makes the dog. As in everything else, it's a combination of nature and nurture. With doggos, the love and the training are the most important.

I'm not against responsible breeding and lots of breeds have been bred responsibly. Border Collies, Afghan Hounds, and some others are carefully watched by real fans of the breeds rather than letting the Kennel Clubs dictate the standards of these gorgeous working dogs. They have purpose and a reason to keep the lines in good working order. They have jobs.

Shepherds used to have jobs and I hope that's the sort that Biden got rather than from a show breeder. Unfortunately, this has not likely the case if he is looking for temperament. He probably got a show GSD. So Biden will likely be able to enjoy his dog for a few years before it will need treatments for hip dysplasia. Especially if the pup came from a good line of show dogs, with a low hindquarters.

This could have been a slam dunk, but Biden is one huge train wreck.

She's had the typical violations, sanitation, ventilation, housekeeping/pests, etc. Nice! A big, commercial operation (250 dog license) of the type that is strictly for profit and nothing else, and fails to police its own industry while crying no fair at any attempt to regulate them, no matter what.

Also throwing plenty of money behind efforts to discredit people who demand better conditions and the laws to ensure them.

First the gays and now throwing shelter dogs under the bus. Tsk. Tsk.
