Reid and Alito Disappoint with Niceness

Columbia Journalism Review is fond of pointing out that if there is a bias in corporate media, it isn't toward the left or the right, but in favor of conflict above all else. Nowhere is this more evident than in Mark Leibovich's absurd, stupid column in this morning's Washington Post. Mr. Leibovich is sorely disappointed that Harry Reid and Samuel Alito had the temerity to act politely to one another, and tries to whip up personal acrimony where none exists, implying that the two just couldn't stand being in each other's presence, rather than simply being anxious to get away from a tiresome photo op (see Reuters photo above):
And it surprised some onlookers -- including from within Reid's staff -- that the senator would even agree to a photo op with Alito after their meeting.

"It's one of the necessary rituals in Washington," Reid spokesman Jim Manley explained of the photo shoot. Emphasis on "necessary."

About 30 photographers crowded behind a red velvet rope line, a few feet from where Reid and Alito stood before a large painting of Harry Truman. They looked left, looked right and Reid kept his left hand buried in his pants pocket for most of the session.
Mr. Leibovich, what did you expect/want? Reid to knee Alito in the nuts? Alito to call Reid a "little bitch"? Note also his cowardly reference to "some onlookers". Damn, what an asshole. This confirmation will be difficult enough without your help, Mark.

UPDATE: Whoah! Um... hello, National Review readers!

ginned up controversy: maybe Reid is crushing Alito's hand. THAT would explain the interesting arm position....
