Low Benefits, Guaranteed!

I came across this insane article by Thomas Sowell, an impassioned defense of Wal-Mart's fleecing of the American public. Mr. Sowell really takes us pinko lefties to task for our silly hangups involving, you know, "social responsibility" and "obligations", words he seems to hold in his mouth with the same comfort as a garden slug.

Mr. Sowell is in attack mode about an upcoming book on the cheapskate retail giant, a book which hasn't come out yet, and which he hasn't read. He's pretty sure is sucks, though. He also is mighty pissed at the New York Times about this article, which he seems not to have read, either.

Tommy, in his impassioned defense, fails to bring up a single specific point to refute, and neglects to address Wal-mart's unbelievable reliance on all of us taxpayers to provide health care to their poverty-stricken employees. (Fun fact: Wal-Mart has more employees on Medicaid than any other corporation in America.) Instead, he simply dismisses all criticisms as "the latest liberal cause", just as Wal-Mart itself accuses us commies of pinning "our nation's health care crisis on the back of one employer." Wait a minute... I'm confused: I thought all of us liberals wanted the federal government to pay for everything. Tsk.

Hey, there's a lot of books I haven't read that I'm pretty sure suck. Think the New Republic will hire me as a reviewer? Sounds like fun!

Fun fact: Unfamiliar with Mr. Sowell? He's the guy who accused hairdressers of living a "deathstyle."

Thomas Sowell used to be syndicated in one of the two dreadful San Francisco newspapers, but thankfully he's disappeared like a skin disease that just goes away slowly on its own over the course of years and finally disappears. I'm very sorry he's cropped up elsewhere, however, though one must give him credit for being a pioneer.

He was the first syndicated op-ed columnist in my memory who would take some outrageous lie and make it the center of whatever argument he was laboriously trudging through. Every fucking time. Of course, now we have lotsa opinionistas on the right who have taken his template to places we'd never thought possible, but Sowell was the Original Lying Asshole writing Essays 101 who blazed the trail for so many.
